A delegation of the AFCONE met with representatives from the World Institute of Nuclear Security in the the margins of the 69th IAEA General Conference in Vienna.
The AFCONE Chairperson used the opportunity to discuss key bilateral and regional nuclear issues that the AFCONE and WINS are working on, especially in the area of nuclear security.
The AFCONE’s goal is to build mutually beneficial partnerships in response to emerging nuclear security challenges, including the growing use of artificial intelligence and new technologies. The wider use of radioactive materials also raises the risk of trafficking, creating potential threats to civilian nuclear projects, particularly in Africa’s emerging markets where infrastructure may still be limited.
The WINS CEO commended the AFCONE’s leadership and reaffirmed the WINS commitment to close collaboration in strengthening nuclear security across the African region. Nuclear security remains the surest guarantee and a fundamental prerequisite for unlocking tomorrow’s nuclear energy opportunities.
The World Institute for Nuclear Security (WINS), based in Vienna, is an international organisation that promotes best practices in nuclear security. It provides training, certification, and guidance to help governments, regulators, and industry protect nuclear and radioactive materials against misuse.
