The African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE) Commissioners convened on 24th June 2026, in a vital move to bolster continental security, non-proliferation, and the peaceful application of atomic energy.
With the African Union’s Agenda 2063 driving increased interest in nuclear technology to bridge the continent’s energy deficit, the Commission emphasized that civilian uses must go hand-in-hand with strict regulatory frameworks. Commissioners reviewed state party compliance with the Pelindaba Treaty, committing to maintaining Africa as a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone. Recognizing the role of nuclear science in sustainable development, the AFCONE Commissioners outlined strategies for deploying atomic technology to improve agriculture, human health, and reliable power generation.
AFCONE’s leadership highlighted that regional stability depends on successfully marrying the continent’s disarmament obligations with safe, civilian nuclear expansion. By accelerating the treaty’s ratification process, the Commission continues to assert Africa’s strong leadership on the global non-proliferation stage.
