The African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE) Commissioners convened on 24th June 2026, in a vital move to bolster continental security, non-proliferation, and the peaceful application of atomic energy. 

State Parties to the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (Pelindaba Treaty) have formally reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to keeping the African continent free from nuclear weapons, while advancing the safe, peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology.

The highly anticipated African nuclear safeguards summit has successfully concluded, representing a historic step forward for regional non-proliferation efforts.

The Finnish Ambassador to South Africa H.E. Pekka Metso hosted the African delegation attending the Nuclear Safeguard training from 19 African nations. The  uplifting safeguard project is supported by the European Union, and facilitated by the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority of Finland (STUK) and is aimed at equipping Africa States implement stringent nuclear material controls.

In a move to accelerate the safe and secure expansion of nuclear technology across the continent, the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE) participated in the Meeting of the Steering Committee of the Forum of Nuclear Regulatory Bodies in Africa (FNRBA).

In a major push to strengthen nuclear non-proliferation and material security across the continent, the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE) and the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority of Finland (STUK) co-hosted a regional training programme focused on International Nuclear Safeguards, at NECSA, South Africa. 

AFCONE welcomed its second fellowship cohort through the Global Research Institute partnership. The exchange program enables students from the USA to travel to Africa to conduct hands-on, collaborative research on nuclear diplomacy and non-proliferation. 

A critical MoU was signed between the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE) and the African Young Generation in Nuclear (AYGN) on the sidelines of the Nuclear Energy Innovation Summit for Africa (NEISA) in Rwanda. 

Representatives from the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) led by H. E. Adedeji Ebo and the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE) Chairperson H.E. Gaspard Liyoko MBOYO met at the NPT Review Conference to advance the implementation of the Treaty of Pelindaba and accelerate global nuclear disarmament

This course is a part of AFCONE’s Programme for Strengthening the Nuclear Material Control Systems in Africa 2023-2027, that is implemented with expert support of the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority of Finland (STUK), and it is made available thanks to the generous support of the European Union and the Government of Finland.
