In a move to accelerate the safe and secure expansion of nuclear technology across the continent, the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE) participated in the Meeting of the Steering Committee of the Forum of Nuclear Regulatory Bodies in Africa (FNRBA).
The week-long deliberations brought together atomic energy leaders, international observers, and safety experts from across the continent to discuss the progress of national regulatory infrastructures.
AFCONE Commissioner Prof EKOKO highlighted that the safe and secure expansion of nuclear technology for power generation, human health, and agriculture must go hand-in-hand with strict regulatory compliance. He further emphasized the critical role of the Treaty of Pelindaba as the cornerstone of continental security and sustainable development.

With the African Union’s Agenda 2063 driving increased interest in nuclear energy for power generation, human health, and agriculture, robust regulatory frameworks are more critical than ever.
During the Steering Committee meeting, leaders emphasized the synergy required between the Treaty of Pelindaba (which established the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone) and the safety mandates overseen by the FNRBA
AFCONE’s participation reaffirms the continent’s commitment to ensuring that nuclear non-proliferation and peaceful civilian uses go hand-in-hand with the highest global standards of nuclear and radiation safety.
