In a major push to strengthen nuclear non-proliferation and material security across the continent, the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE) and the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority of Finland (STUK) co-hosted a regional training programme focused on International Nuclear Safeguards, at NECSA, South Africa.
The intensive capacity-building sessions are a core component of AFCONE’s ambitious five-year “Uplifting Nuclear Safeguards in Africa” programme. Designed to support the implementation of the Treaty of Pelindaba, the training brought together a diverse cohort of 25 delegates and safeguards practitioners.
The week-long capacity-building event brought together delegates from 19 African nations, reflecting growing continental commitment to the peaceful and secure use of nuclear technologies.
To support this industrial development, AFCONE launched an ambitious multi-year programme to strengthen State Systems of Accounting for and Control of Nuclear Materials (SSACs). The initiative receives vital expert support from STUK and is co-funded by the European Union and the Republic of Finland.

The inclusion of delegates from 19 African States highlights the widespread momentum for developing nuclear safeguards in Africa. Participating countries are actively using these regional collaborations to standardize their national legislation, build technical resources, and train future nuclear regulators.
AFCONE and STUK will continue to utilize training programmes like this to foster knowledge transfer, eventually building sustainable, continent-wide structures for nuclear non-proliferation and safety.
