The Finnish Ambassador to South Africa H.E. Pekka Metso hosted the African delegation attending the Nuclear Safeguard training from 19 African nations. The uplifting safeguard project is supported by the European Union, and facilitated by the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority of Finland (STUK) and is aimed at equipping Africa States implement stringent nuclear material controls.
The five-day intensive workshop brought together nuclear regulators, policy-makers, and safeguards practitioners to strengthen the continent’s nuclear non-proliferation frameworks.
H.E. Pekka Metso highlighted the critical importance of the Treaty of Pelindaba in championing African development. The Ambassador emphasized that as African nations expand their peaceful nuclear applications for energy, medicine, and agriculture, robust and comprehensive safeguards are essential for building international confidence and ensuring regional security.
