The Republic of Kenya is poised to rewrite its Africa’s energy narrative by transitioning from a reliance on geothermal and hydro to becoming East Africa’s first country to harness nuclear energy.

The African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE) highlighted the critical role of nuclear technology in meeting Africa’s rising energy demand during the International Conference on Nuclear Energy (ICoNE), held in Nairobi, Kenya.

In an era where nuclear energy is increasingly recognized as a cornerstone of clean energy strategies, the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) recently brought together a specialized group of Africa senior leaders, regulators, and industry experts for an Executive Leadership Workshop, designed to address the pressing challenges and opportunities facing the nuclear sector today. 

AFCONE joined Heads of States and Global Leaders during Nuclear Energy Summit France on 10th March 2026. The Summit was hosted by France and opened by President Macron together with IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi and attended by global leaders and representatives of more than 60 countries. 

The African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE), in collaboration with the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), successfully convened the Africa Nuclear Security Dialogue, 3-5 February 2026, at Cape town in South Africa, to address the evolving landscape of nuclear safety and security on the Africa continent.

The Pan-African Parliament (PAP), under the leadership of Mrs. Lindiwe Khumalo welcomed Arican Commission of Nuclear Energy (AFCONE) delegation for strategic discussion on strengthening legislative frameworks for the peaceful use of nuclear technology in Africa.

AFCONE Chairperson Gaspard Liyoko Mboyo attended the 39th annual African Union (AU) summit in Addis Ababa Ethopia. The summit took place from the 11th to the 15th of February 2026 and was attended by over 20 000 guests.

African leaders and regional bodies have reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining the African continent as a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone (NWFZ), driven by the Treaty of Pelindaba.

African Heads of State, Government officials, over 20,000 guests, alongside the Secretary-General of the United Nations gathered for the 39th African Union Summit to address critical issues of sustainable development, energy security, and economic transformation.
