The African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE) proudly marked the completion of an intensive five-day specialized training program on nuclear safeguards held in Rabat, Morocco.
Hosted in Rabat, the capacity-building initiative formed a vital part of AFCONE’s multi-year flagship program aimed at uplifting regional nuclear safeguards. The project received core financial funding from the European Union (EU) and was delivered in close technical collaboration with Finland’s Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK).

Local leadership and operational support were provided by the Moroccan Agency for Nuclear and Radiological Safety and Security (AMSSNuR), alongside critical contributions from national scientific bodies including CNESTEN.
The closing ceremony was graced by AFCONE Vice-Chairperson H.E. Dr. Khammar Mrabit as the chief guest in company of Director General of AMSSNuR Dr. Saïd Mouline.

H.E. Mrabit congratulated the delegates and assisted in issuing completion certificates to the participants from various African nations. He further extended deep appreciation to the European Union (EU) for providing the financial backing necessary to execute this critical project.

Nuclear safeguards are vital verification systems used globally and regionally to ensure that peaceful nuclear materials are not diverted into weapon programs. For Africa, robust safeguards provide transparency and Trust for civilian nuclear applications.
“This training marks a critical step in our multi-year mission to uplift nuclear oversight regimes,” said AFCONE Acting Executive Secretary Dr. Collins Omondi. “Safeguarding our nuclear materials is not just a non-proliferation duty; it is an essential catalyst for the secure, sustainable socio-economic transformation envisioned in Agenda 2063”.
