In an era where nuclear energy is increasingly recognized as a cornerstone of clean energy strategies, the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) recently brought together a specialized group of Africa senior leaders, regulators, and industry experts for an Executive Leadership Workshop, designed to address the pressing challenges and opportunities facing the nuclear sector today.
The workshop highlighted that for nuclear energy to meet global net-zero goals by 2050, it must move beyond traditional operational models and adopt innovative leadership strategies, embracing advanced technologies and workforce diversity to accelerate deployment.

The Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) conducted the executive-level workshops, in collaboration with AFCONE, focusing on leadership for safety, human capital development, and fostering diversity in the nuclear sector, including mentoring for future leaders.
AFCONE Chairperson H. E. Gaspard LIYOKO MBOYO emphasised the future of nuclear energy requires a combination of technical expertise and dynamic leadership to bridge the gap between innovation and nuclear implementation.

The training follows a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE) and the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA).
The MoU signed in February 2026, aims to advance the peaceful application of nuclear technology for Africa’s development. Key aspects of the agreement include fostering capacity building, strengthening regulatory frameworks, and enhancing research for energy transition.
