The African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE) and the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) have launched Aa broader joint Initiative to strengthen nuclear regulatory capacity across Africa.
On the 7 August 2026, AFCONE-NEA organised a joint webinar on engagement Series focusing on Trust, Stakeholder Engagement, and Risk-Informed Regulation.
The initiative supports the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear science and technology on the continent, in line with the Pelindaba Treaty and the African Union Agenda 2063.
As an increasing number of African countries consider or advance nuclear power programmes, strong, independent and trusted regulatory institutions will be essential to ensuring the safe, secure and responsible deployment of nuclear technologies.
The Engagement Series brings together African nuclear regulators, together with selected senior policymakers and international partners, to discuss strategic priorities for nuclear regulation and oversight in Africa. It also provides a platform to exchange international good practices, identify regulatory needs, and strengthen collaboration among African regulators and the international nuclear community.
