The African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE) has expanded high-level diplomatic talks with the U.S. Mission to the African Union (USAU), targeting enhanced collaboration on regional nuclear safety, non-proliferation compliance under the Pelindaba Treaty, and peaceful atomic applications for sustainable continental development.
The discussions centered on leveraging atomic technology for socio-economic transformation. Both sides evaluated how nuclear applications in agriculture, radiation medicine, and low-carbon power generation support the broader goals of AU Agenda 2063.
AFCONE Acting Executive Secretary, Dr Collins OMONDI reiterated the importance of universal ratification of the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty. He emphasized securing reliable international safeguards and technical support to monitor and manage civilian nuclear programs safely across member state.
With decades of experience in commercial power and safety standards, the United States offers a strong foundation for a nuclear partnership with Africa. Public and private partnerships will drive Africa’s safe clean energy growth and speed up reliable power access.
