In a move to strengthen nuclear non-proliferation and promote the peaceful use of atomic energy across the continent and beyond, the Chairperson of the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE), Mr. Gaspard Liyoko Mboyo, held a high-level meeting with H.E. Amb. Mohamed Edrees, Permanent Representative of the African Union (AU) to the United Nations. 

As the 11th Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) commenced at the United Nations Headquarters on April 27, 2026, the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE) arrived with a clear, united voice: Africa demands meaningful progress on nuclear disarmament, legally binding security assurances, and the right to peaceful nuclear technology for development.

AFCONE joined Heads of States and Global Leaders during Nuclear Energy Summit France on 10th March 2026. The Summit was hosted by France and opened by President Macron together with IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi and attended by global leaders and representatives of more than 60 countries. 

The African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE), in collaboration with the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), successfully convened the Africa Nuclear Security Dialogue, 3-5 February 2026, at Cape town in South Africa, to address the evolving landscape of nuclear safety and security on the Africa continent.
