Experts from various institutions and the European Union delegation attended a Seminar on “ Regional Security, Nuclear Safety, and Human Rights Perspectives”.
This seminar aimed to bring together African and Ukraine experts to examine three critical challenges posed of war against and its direct implications in Africa continent. The discussion provided policy‒relevant insights and African perspectives on how global governance systems must adapt to emerging security risks, including regional security spillovers, nuclear safety in armed conflict and militarization of children.
Participants emphasized that Africa is not merely affected by these developments but has a critical role in shaping global responses, advancing accountability, and strengthening international norms in support of peace, nuclear safety and human rights.
AFCONE Commissioner Prof Ekoko Gracien shared on “Enhancing Nuclear Safety: Protecting Nuclear Power Plants Against Military Threats”. He emphasised that any use of nuclear energy, installations, devices and facilities shall be safe, well regulated, duly controlled and environmentally sound. Accidents at nuclear installations have the potential of transboundary impacts.
