AFCONE Chairperson Mr. Gaspard Liyoko Mboyo participates 9th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in February 2026.
AFCONE Chairperson Gaspard Liyoko Mboyo attended the 39th annual African Union (AU) summit in Addis Ababa Ethopia. The summit took place from the 11th to the 15th of February 2026 and was attended by over 20 000 guests.
The Summit placed water and sanitation at the centre of Africa’s development agenda, settling on the theme “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063”.
The event featured an extensive agenda aimed at addressing challenges faced by the African continent, in accordance with the AU’s Agenda 2063. The agenda focused on industrialization, infrastructure development, economic integration and “silencing the guns.

While in attendance, H.E. Mr. Gaspard Liyoko Mboyo along with H.E. Lerato D. Mataboge, Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy at the African Union Commission and Mr. William D. Magwood the Director-General of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which is aimed at accelerating the use nuclear science and technology for socio-economic advancement on the African continent.
The event marked a substantial milestone in the advancement of peaceful nuclear innovation in the fields of science and technology, demonstrating that nuclear energy has the ability to evolve past the barricades of conflict or war and instead be utilized to empower and improve the lives of African people.
During the summit, Mr Mboyo praised the agreement for being a strategic milestone, emphasizing the substantial role that AFCONE will play in its support for the AU and the Pelindaba treaty. “It is a distinct honour to join this landmark event, which initiates a new chapter in strengthening nuclear cooperation between Africa and the international community. This MoU is not a bureaucratic exercise, but a strategic step toward building the most secure and sustainable nuclear cooperation, at a critical time when Africa is seeking to meet its massive energy needs while advancing Agenda 2063 and responding to the global call for low-carbon and sustainable energy trajectories.” (citation: AU website). The MoU will remain valid for an initial period of three years, before being reviewed for a possible renewal.
AFCONE opens its doors to young professionals in a newly instated internship program
The AFCONE executive Secretariat in Pretoria South Africa has ushered in an internship program aimed at recruiting, training and developing the skills of young professionals in the fields of nuclear engineering, science and technology as well as peace and securities. This program is the first of its kind and signifies monumental strides being made by AFCONE to equip young professionals with employable skills.
The internship program will span across a three-month period and offers a multitude of training and skills development opportunities in addition to networking and learning engagements. Through this program, AFCONE intends to educate a younger demographic on the value of the Non Proliferation Treaty and the organizations that exist to support it; as well as the non-violent uses of nuclear power in the fields of health, good production and electrical engineering.
