25th Commemoration of the Pelindaba Treaty Opening for Signature

On 12 April 2021, the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE) commemorated the 25th Anniversary of the opening for signature of the African Nuclear Weapon Free Zone Treaty (Pelindaba Treaty). Several High-Level Officials delivered Statements: Their Excellencies the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Algeria, the UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, the President Designate of the Tenth Review Conference of the Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT), the Secretary General of OPANAL (Latin America and Caribbean NWFZ Agency), the Chair of Central Asia Nuclear Weapon Free Zone (CA-NWFZ) Semipalatinsk Treaty, the Brunai Darussalam Chair of the Executive Committee of the South East Asia-NWFZ Commission, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO), the Executive Director of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) and the Representative of the Russian Federation Ministry of Foreign Affairs.l Officials delivered Statements.
The AFCONE is convinced that internationally recognized nuclear-weapon-free zones are making an important contribution to the international disarmament and non-proliferation regime, to the maintenance of international peace and security as well as to the safe and secure peaceful uses of the nuclear energy.
Celebrating this special day has been also an opportunity to (a) promote the universalization of the Pelindaba Treaty, calling upon the remaining African States to ratify the Treaty and on the relevant parties to adhere to its attached Protocols, (b) develop and foster the international cooperation towards the full implementation of the NPT provisions and the implementation of its Review Conferences conclusions and agreed action plans.
